Since then, I have learned something important. Good government is rarely about who gives the best speech or wins the argument of the day. It is about doing the work, bringing people together, making difficult choices, and remembering who sent us to Juneau in the first place. We have accomplished a great deal, but Alaska faces some very real challenges. Energy costs are rising. Families are leaving our state. Our schools need both stability and accountability. Health care remains too expensive. Housing is difficult to find. And year after year, we continue to debate the same fundamental questions about the budget and the Permanent Fund. I believe Alaska's best days can still be ahead of us. That will require leadership willing to look beyond the next election and begin building the Alaska we want our children to inherit.
